Lost in Cody: How the Chamber of Commerce Saved the Day (and Our Roads)

September 23, 2024

Let's face it, Cody locals know you can't always trust your GPS in Wyoming. Our roads and bridges have a mind of their own, at least according to Google Maps. Well, a recent incident involving confused tourists and frustrated residents highlighted the quirky side of mapping software.

RV’s on 12th Street

Our Visitor Center staff was fielding several questions. Why were so many RVs and tourists clogging up quiet, residential north 12th Street? This narrow road is definitely not built for behemoth trailers, and it certainly isn't the scenic route into town.

A little digging revealed the culprit: mapping services. Tourists arriving from the Billings highway were being inexplicably rerouted up the steep hills of 12th Street towards Sheridan due to "congestion" on the regular route.

While we appreciate mapping services trying to be helpful, 12th Street just can't handle that kind of traffic. Not to mention, these poor visitors were missing out on our charming downtown area and all the other gems Cody has to offer.

Chamber to the Rescue!

Here's where the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce shines. Thanks to our strong relationships, we were able to team up with WYDOT (Wyoming Department of Transportation) to get to the bottom of this rerouting mess. We confirmed the issue and requested edits to the mapping software algorithms.

Back on Track (and on the Right Road!)

Working together, we fixed the glitch! Visitors are now directed along the proper highways designed for their vehicles. This not only keeps our roads safe but also ensures visitors have a much better experience in Cody. They can explore our delightful downtown and discover all the other wonderful parts of town with ease.

The Cody Country Chamber: More Than Just a Ribbon Cutting

This is just one example of how the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce goes above and beyond. We champion our members and the entire business community by advocating for smooth operations and, of course, promoting an unforgettable visitor experience. After all, that's Western hospitality at its finest!
